Spain’s Leverage Trading Market Faces Structural Shifts: Fewer Traders, Faster Evolution
16 April 2025, Madrid – Investment Trends has today released its 2025 Spain Leverage Trading Report, capturing the sentiments and behaviours of Spanish CFD/FX traders in a market undergoing sustained contraction and evolution. The findings underline the rising stakes for platforms looking to maintain relevance in an increasingly selective environment.
The report shows that Spain’s active leverage trader population dropped to 35,000 in the 12 months to February 2025, marking a 10% decline from 2024 and the fourth consecutive annual fall. New trader sign-ups have reached their lowest levels on record, driven in part by ongoing restrictions on digital marketing and increasingly challenging acquisition conditions.
“With fewer Spanish traders entering the market, the imperative has shifted—retaining the existing client base is now the strongest growth lever,” said Lorenzo Vignati, Associate Research Director at Investment Trends. “Retention is no longer a defensive play; it’s a primary business strategy.”

The report also indicates that while most traders still begin their investing journey with shares or ETFs, a growing cohort is entering directly through crypto and leveraged products. These new entrants often seek immediate exposure to high-risk instruments, bypassing conventional learning curves.
“Brokers must break away from legacy onboarding assumptions,” said Vignati. “Today’s first-time Spanish trader could be entering straight into crypto or CFDs—and they expect fast, intuitive support from the first click.”
The report highlights that the market is made up of a range of trading platforms, including multi-asset brokers and CFD/FX specialists. Traders are now familiar with an average of 6.8 brands and typically use 1.7 providers. Peer referrals, low commissions (48%), and ease of use (47%) are key drivers of platform selection.
Data also shows that around one in three traders recall recent innovations from their provider—most commonly improved charting tools, copy trading enhancements, and user interface upgrades. These traders consistently report higher satisfaction and advocacy.
“Innovation has become the clearest pathway to advocacy in Spain’s leverage trading market,” Vignati added. “It’s not just about making improvements—it’s about making them visible.”

The results are drawn from the Investment Trends 2025 Spain Leverage Trading Report, based on a quantitative online survey of 622 traders in Spain conducted between January to February 2025.
